Good from the Bad
When the car stops moving and you are full of pain, it is impossible to think, "this is good." Your leg is mangled, you are bleeding from your head and your arm AND your leg. You cannot move because your car, perfectly fine a moment ago, is now a mangled mess that has you trapped. In that moment, no one thinks "this is great!"
There is no denying that there is plenty of bad in the world. It seems the TV news is screaming more death, destruction and pain then ever before. Your Facebook feed is full of bad news. The bad news is everywhere.
Much of this bad news is personal. Your loved one loses his job. Your child gets bullied at school. Your mother is slowly suffering in a nursing home after your dad died just a few years ago. And now you sit in a smoking car in terrible pain.
In the Bible, Joseph was no stranger to bad things happening. While he was his father's favorite, his brothers hated him. When he had a dream that they would bow down to him, he shared it with his brothers. It did not go well. They were going to kill him but the less horrible option was to sell him into slavery. He went from the favorite son to slave. He then was jailed, wrongly accused and forgotten.
But then things turned around for Joseph. He used his gift of interpreting dreams to help pharaoh understand the meaning of his. He went from last to first in a moment's time. He went from jailed slave to second in command of the kingdom.
When you or your loved one is in a serious accident car crash, injury at work, or the victim of malpractice it is impossible to deny that is bad. There are plenty of bad things that happen in life and there is no denying that they were bad.
When Joseph's brothers met him, now the second most powerful man in the kingdom, they were rightfully afraid for their lives. But in that moment, Joseph said something very interesting. He said, "You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives." Genesis 50:20. Joseph was acknowledging the bad in what they did. They intentionally hurt him. It was bad. But that bad placed him where he was meant to be. That bad made him a slave in Egypt and gave him the opportunity to get where he was able to excel.
It is really important to remember, the bad was still bad. I am sure Joseph did not like being a slave, wrongfully accused, and being forgotten. But all that bad allowed him to succeed. That bad placed him where he needed to be. He then used that bad for good.
If you or your loved one has been injured, that is bad. Don't deny that is was wrong, it was truly bad. But like Joseph, use that bad for an opportunity to do good. Maybe, like Joseph, you can use your injuries as an opportunity to help others. Maybe you can use your harm as a lesson for the wrongdoer so they don't hurt others in the future. Maybe you can use the compensation from your injuries to pay for college for a loved one, start a charity or help the homeless. Maybe this bad thing is the chance for you to make good out of the bad.
